The Shoulder Pain Cycle
I love helping people just like you to get rid of your shoulder pain and get back to whatever it is that you love doing! In fact, it’s the reason I became a Physiotherapist.
And that is why hearing this everyday frustrates me so much…
So please read on because, if the following story resonates with you then I CAN HELP YOU!
The Shoulder Pain Merry-Go-Round
You get shoulder pain and it doesn’t go away on it’s own, so you decide to go to your doctor.
Your doctor looks at it briefly and recommends you rest for 4-6 weeks, which for the most part you do.
Unfortunately the second you start using your shoulder again, your pain comes back. So off you go to your doctor again who now sends you off to get a scan on your shoulder.
Once you’ve had your scan your doctor tells you that there may be some degeneration, tears or bursitis and sends you off to get a cortisone in your shoulder.
The cortisone is a rather painful experience, with an oversized needle. Your pain does one of three things:
It doesn’t change at all, leaving you feeling frustrated
It goes away for a few weeks before returning, leaving you feeling frustrated
It goes away for a few months before returning, leaving you feeling frustrated
So after your pain in your shoulder returns you head back to your doctor again, feeling rather annoyed with how the whole process has unfolded. Your doctor mentions that you may need another cortisone or that you may need surgery, however you should try Physiotherapy before that.
So you go to a Physio, however you feel like Physio is just delaying the inevitable...surgery!
Does that sound familiar? It sounds all too familiar to me unfortunately.
What should happen in a perfect world?
You present straight to the physio to begin with OR you present to your doctor and they send you straight to the physio.
I ensure that you don’t rest your shoulder completely because it will weaken the muscles supporting your shoulder, making your pain worse.
We then work together with some manual therapy through your shoulder and specific exercises to get rid of your pain and get your full shoulder movement back.
Then we strengthen the muscles that support your shoulder with some rehab that isn’t boring yellow band rotations.
By this stage you are out of pain and back to doing what you love!
It may seem too simple or basic, but this is what works! There is an incredibly large body of research that backs this up and it kills me that it’s not the norm yet for shoulder treatment.
